THE CONSTRUCTION IN 1616
In the 16th century, Bolsward was an important center for shipping. There were many ships that sailed from the city to other parts of Europe. However, the canal between Bolsward and Sint Jansklooster was often shallow and turbulent, making shipping difficult.
To improve shipping, it was decided in 1612 to build a new canal. The canal was built by Jan Jacobszoon Rijp, who played a major role in the construction of many canal projects in the Netherlands. The canal was completed in 1616 and was called the Bolswardertrekvaart.
SUCCESS AND DECLINE
The canal was a great success and shipping between Bolsward and Sint Jansklooster improved considerably. The canal was also important for agriculture in the region, as it provided a link between the city and the countryside. In the 18th century, steam engines were even used to keep the canal navigable.
However, in the 19th century the Bolswardertrekvaart fell into disrepair. Industry increased in the region and shipping moved to the larger canal projects in the north of the Netherlands. The canal was used less and less and fell into disrepair.
RESTORATION AND TOURISM
However, the canal was renovated again in the 20th century. The canal was widened and locks and bridges were constructed. Nowadays the canal is again an important connection between Bolsward and Sint Jansklooster and is used by recreational users and tourists.
