HISTORY AND HERITAGE

From Roman times to the Great Pier

Friesland has a long history that is inextricably linked to various periods and influences, from Roman times to the Middle Ages. The Romans left their mark on Friesland, where they built settlements and traded. In later centuries - such as the early Middle Ages - Friesland played an important role in the history of the Netherlands, with figures such as Grote Pier who resisted the Habsburgs.

The Frisian place names and laws also reflect this rich historical background. It is fascinating to see how the change of form took place and how the historical context is still visible in present-day Friesland.

The heritage awaits you

You will also find a lot of unique heritage in the province. Historic houses, also called stinzen, adorn the beautiful landscape. Iconic national monuments, such as the Oldehove in Ljouwert, await you. And the museums, old churches and the provincial government - the States of Friesland - also tell a fascinating story.

The Eleven Cities Tour

During your holiday, enjoy the story of the Elfstedentocht; the most famous cultural event in Friesland. This skating tour connects the historical Eleven Cities. The tour of tours is a historical tradition and a symbol of Frisian identity. You can learn more about it in the museum in Hindeloopen.

THE FRISIAN TERPS

Terps are artificial dwelling mounds and important in the Frisian cultural landscape. From 500 BC they were constructed in the salt marsh area of Friesland. This was to provide protection against flooding.

Over the centuries, the terps grew in height and size. This was due to the continuous throwing up of new layers and waste. Friesland once had about 1300 terps, perhaps even more.

Many terps were dug up in the 19th and 20th centuries for their fertile soil. The highest terp in the Netherlands is Hogebeintum in Friesland. It measures 8.80 meters above NAP. Terps are not only important archaeologically. They also prove the centuries-old battle against the water in this region.
