THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES IN FRIESLAND.

DISCOVER THEM FROM HÚNS.

THE FRIESIAN ELEVEN CITIES

When you say Friesland, you say Elfstedentocht. The Frisian eleven cities are spread across the entire province. Dokkum is the northernmost city in the province of Friesland. Stavoren is located on the IJsselmeer and used to be an important trading city. Sloten is located in the south and is the smallest city of the eleven. And each city has its own unique characteristics such as mounds or an important waterway.

HISTORY OF THE FRIESIAN ELEVEN CITIES

The Frisian eleven cities have a rich history. They are of great historical significance to the region and later became famous worldwide through the legendary Elfstedentocht.

In the Middle Ages, the 11 cities were granted city rights. For example, Stavoren, the oldest city of the Frisian cities, was granted city rights in 1061. Other cities followed, such as Dokkum. These rights gave the cities a lot of prestige, more economic advantages and typical urban features such as city walls.

They became important trading centres along waterways such as the Zuiderzee. The Frisian admiralty was particularly important for trade and shipping in Harlingen and Dokkum.

UNIQUE CHARM AND SIGHTS

Each Frisian city has its own charm, historical significance and unique sights. For example, Leeuwarden has historic canals and beautiful mansions. Sloten, the smallest city in Friesland, has a cozy atmosphere. Harlingen and Stavoren both offer beautiful views over the water. Hindeloopen is known for its rich maritime history. And the museums in the eleven cities, such as the Jopie Huisman Museum in Workum, provide a beautiful cultural experience. In short, each city is unique.

In every city you can enjoy a mix of history, culture and recreation. Such as water sports, museums and fun local festivals. This makes the eleven cities an important part of the tourist offer in Friesland.

THE ELEVEN CITIES TOUR

Another reason why many tourists visit the Frisian eleven cities is of course the Elfstedentocht. Despite the fact that the tour is organized less and less often due to the mild winters, the tour of tours still appeals to the imagination.

And with other events such as the Fiets Elfstedentocht the cities stay connected in a sporty way. Also the 11fountains, an art project with 11 modern fountains in the Frisian cities, is an important reason to visit the cities.
