Skûtsjesilen, the iconic water sport of Friesland. With a rich history, unique shipbuilding and lively events, skûtsjesilen is an unforgettable experience for sailors and spectators alike.

THE HISTORY

The history of skûtsjesilen dates back to the 18th century, when Frisian skûtsjes were used as cargo ships to transport peat, manure, and other goods through the waterways of Friesland. These flat-bottomed sailing ships were essential to the region's economy and transportation, and were often crewed by tough sailors known for their craftsmanship and courage. Over time, sailing with skûtsjes grew into a popular sport, with the ships being converted and adapted for competitive races on the Frisian lakes and canals.

UNIQUE CONSTRUCTION

What makes skûtsjes so unique is their characteristic construction. These traditional Frisian ships are characterized by their flat bottom, which allows them to sail even in shallow waters, and their large sail area, which ensures speed and maneuverability on the water. The slender hull and long sword make skûtsjes perfect for both competitions and relaxed sailing trips through the picturesque Frisian landscapes.

MANURE RACE

A special event is the Manure Race. A unique sailing challenge from Workum in Friesland to the Bulb Region and back. During the race, skûtsjes have to bring dried cow manure to the Bulb Region as quickly as possible in the most traditional way possible. This means that only sail and hand power is allowed during the race. When the wind is not favorable, the ships are pulled or pushed. Due to the historic nature of the race, only historic ships are allowed to participate.
